LET THE TRUTH BE TOLD

During the late 1970’s into the early 1980’s, the City of Atlanta, Georgia, had reached a milestone in history that would rank it among the South’s most progressive city. And in 1973 Maynard Holbrook Jackson was elected as the first African American mayor to serve in a major southern city. In his first two terms Jackson instituted affirmative action programs that allocated a portion of city’s business to minority firms. But despite strong economic growth the large black population of the city remained poor and impoverished. One of Mayor Jackson’s priorities was to ensure that minority businesses received more municipal contracts. He also transformed the police department in an effort to reduce mistreatment charges of African Americans and assist black officers to rise in the ranks.

When we look back into Atlanta’s history and its development which made it an international City that it is today, we must be careful not to forget it’s not too distant past. Atlanta has experienced ongoing issues of race relations dating back to the early 1800’s, years before the Civil War which was fought from 1861 to 1865. These issues have affected the city and its political structure, educational, and courts systems for decades. Years after the courts ordered in 1962, for barricades to be removed from Peyton Road in Southwest Atlanta that prevented blacks from moving into majority white neighborhoods. This monumental decision opened up new areas of the city for black residential development, but it also caused many white Atlanta residents to relocate to the suburbs.

Meanwhile, years later something bad was brewing throughout impoverished black neighborhoods of the city that would put Atlanta into the international media spotlight. Two black boys were found murdered in July 1979, which began as one of the most highly publicized murder saga’s in the city’s history. And two years later, twenty-nine black youths would be found dead. And only one suspect, Wayne Williams who many people believe was unjustly accused and set-up as a fall guy for the murders.
